Vijayawada
Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA: Buoyed up by the consistent successful performances by Krishna district archers both at national and international competitions, Krishna District Sports Authority is planning to approach the State Government and Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) for the setting up of a comprehensive archery academy in Vijayawada, with quality coaches imparting new techniques to archers. District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar said here on Wednesday that within a span of three years, Ch. Lenin, M. Rishitha and Mangal Singh, all Vijayawada archers, made India proud by winning world and Asian medals. "These archers are self-made as there are no proper coaches available. By setting up an academy on a par with the TATA Archery Academy at Jamshedpur, more youngsters can take up this sport in a determined manner. Soon we will make an official representation to the officers-concerned," he pointed put. He said there was no dearth of sports venues for setting up of an archery academy as the district was having facilities in places like Mylavaram, Gudivada and Nuzvid. He said in the entire Andhra Pradesh, just one academy existed in Ranga Reddy district under the supervision of Sports Authority of India. "The need of the hour is to have one more in Vijayawada, which will spur archery activity in the neighbouring districts as well," he added. Apart from three international archers, N. Seshagiri, N. Ganga Mohan, Zail Singh, N. Vamsidhar, N. Mallikharjun, J. Rama Rao and Jignesh are other archers who garnered many medals in the national circuit.
Felicitation
"It is heartening news that Mangal Singh is selected to take part in the Asian Games at Doha to be held in the month of December," Mr. Sudhakar added. Meanwhile, Krishna District Archery Association, District Sports Authority and Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions are jointly organising a felicitation function at IGMC Stadium on Thursday for Rishita which will be presided over by Boppanna Satyanarayana Rao, director, Sri Chaintaya Educational Institutions. Member of Parliament L. Rajagopal, and many district officials will attend the function to congratulate young Mandava Rishitha on her feat.
