GOING HI-TECH: The antenna to link the satellite near the police headquarters in Puducherry.
PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry is all set to join other States in the country for transferring crime related data, messages and opening communication channel through satellite. The infrastructure for POLNET, the satellite based communication channel for the entire police force in the country, has been put in place and testing commenced a few days ago, according to highly placed police officers. The POLNET, an effort by the Ministry of Home Affairs and implemented through the Directorate of Co-ordination Police Wireless to connect all States, district headquarters and police stations across the country, will ensure secure communication of messages. It integrates all the existing communication systems wireless, cell phones, land phones and satellite phones enabling interlinking of the network, a senior police officer said. "Earlier, the mode of communication was through wireless, which could be intercepted. The POLNET would ensure secure communication and directly link all police stations," he said. The infrastructure has been put up in the Union Territory at a cost of Rs.72,29,929. The communication system includes six VSAT (very small apprature terminal) put up at the CID Complex and offices of the SP North, the SP South in Puducherry and the SP offices in Karaikal, Mahe and the CI office in Yanam. In these places, multi access radiotelephony base subscriber units, MART (BSU) have also been installed.
