Dasmunsi, Bardhan discuss UNI takeover

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: In an attempt to find a way out of the United News of India takeover issue, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi on Wednesday called on the Communist Party of India general secretary A.B. Bardhan here.

Mr. Bardhan said that Mr. Dasmunsi apprised him of the steps taken by the Government to sort out the issue and that he would apprise Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of it shortly.

The Left parties have opposed the decision of the UNI Board to transfer the shares of the news agency to Mediawest, an investment arm of Essel group, and sought intervention by the Government in the matter.

Mr. Dasmunsi also informed Mr. Bardhan that the Government was seeking the opinion of various political parties on the proposed move to invite Chinese President Hu Jintao to address the joint session of Parliament. Mr. Hu is scheduled to visit India next month when the winter session of Parliament is slated to begin.
