Bengal gram and red gram infested with pod borer

Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Bengal gram and red gram crop in the district have been infested with the pod borer insect pest.

The insect attack was identified during a rapid mobile survey team of scientists. It was in the initial stages, not widespread. But it was likely to increase by the second week of November, said senior scientist Ravi Deshmukh of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

In Bengal Gram, the incidence of pests was high enough to cause losses. There were more than two eggs per plant or one insect in one square metre area, they said.

`Spray insecticides'

Farmers should take up spraying of insecticides when the flowering was around 20-25 per cent. It should also be taken up when a minimum of one insect or two eggs were noticed on each plant, they said.

In the toor crop, the attack was not as high as to cause losses.

Farmers cautioned

Scientists have cautioned farmers not to use endosulfan or chloropyrephos as the first spray. Agriculture Department officials have also cautioned farmers against the spread of Sterility Mosaic Disease. They have been asked to check spread of the virus by uprooting and burning affected plants and by taking up regular spraying of pesticides.
