Gutka: Congress to write to Manmohan Singh

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The State unit of the Congress has decided to write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention to arrest the fall in prices of arecanut in the State following Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss's statement that the sale of gutka would be banned.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, KPCC president M. Mallikarjun Kharge said the party would urge the Prime Minister to direct Mr. Ramadoss to issue a clarification on the issue. The Minister's statement on banning gukta from next year had resulted in a sharp fall in prices of arecanut and decline in the volume of trade of the commodity, Mr. Kharge alleged.
