Meet on Vaishnava bhakti literature

VIJAYAWADA: A two-day national symposium on `Vaishnava bhakti literature' began here at Satavahana College on Wednesday, with Medasani Mohan, Project Director of Annamacharya Project in Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, who made the keynote address, explaining to the delegates the intricacies and nuances of `vaishnava' devotional philosophy as seen in Telugu literature over the years.

Reciting verses from Nannaya's Mahabharatha and also from Andhra Mahabhagavatham, Mr. Mohan explained the finer points of `bhakti' as it reflected in the characterisation of Lord Krishna.

He also cited examples from Manucharitra, the works of Tallapaka poets and of Tarigonda Vengamamba.

Avanigadda MLA Mandali Buddha Prasad, who was chief guest, felt that there was a need to bring to light many other works of devotional importance.

Telugu people settled in far off places like Mauritius were still following certain devotional practices, which underlined the importance of protecting these traditional systems.

Special Officer of Alvar Divyaprabandha Project of the TTD K. Sarvoththam Rao explained the objective of the symposium.

College secretary Gundavarapu Prajapathi Rao presided over the function, while college chairman V. Sambi Reddy explained the progress of the institution.
