CHENNAI: As expected, two-time zone chairman M. Subramanian is the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate for Chennai Mayor.

Mr. Subramanian, who has worked closely with Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin over the years, was chosen because of his experience in the Corporation, proven efficiency and clean image.

The party will field R. Satyabama for the post of deputy mayor. Given the DMK's overwhelming majority in the council, both candidates would win even without the support of alliance partners.

The party will field Thenmozhi Gopinathan in Madurai for Mayorship, A.L. Subramanian in Tirunelveli and Rekha Priyadarshini in Salem.

For the deputy mayor post, the DMK will field P.M. Mannan in Madurai, K. Muthuramalingam in Tirunelveli, C. Paneerselvam in Salem, N. Karthick in Coimbatore and M. Anbazhagan in Tiruchi, says a press release signed by the DMK president M. Karunanidhi.

In another release, party general secretary K. Anbazhagan has announced that A. Murugavel will replace S. Veerachandiran as the candidate for the Kathivakkam Municipal chairman.

The party withdrew its candidate for the Mannargudi panchyat union. Mr. Anbazhagan said the post had been allotted to Communist Party of India and wanted DMK men to work for the victory of the CPI candidate.

Mr. Anbazhagan warned partymen against working against official alliance candidates.

Disciplinary action would be taken against anyone found violating the directive regardless of the post they occupied in the party.
