Mizoram enters final

CHENNAI: Holder Mizoram needed a 4-3 verdict in the tie-breaker to douse the enthusiasm of Arunachal Pradesh and move into the final of the National sub-junior football championship at the Nehru stadium here on Wednesday. The teams were locked 2-2 at end of full time and extra time.

The semifinal was played in rain for most part but the soggy conditions did not come in the way of the enterprise shown by both sides.

However, the slips and falls, a common feature, left a muddy paste on the players' jerseys, so that when Mizoram won a vital penalty kick in the dying minutes of the game no one could identify the `culprit'.

Lalhimpuia converted the kick to add to his 22nd-minute goal.

For Arunachal Pradesh, which played with a lot of purpose, Pani Raju (23rd) and Tai Bharath (62nd) were the scorers. Mention has to be made of the spirited goalkeeping by Tapi Apa which forced the issue to the shoot-out.

In the tie-breaker, S. Lalrinpuia, David Lalrinmuana, S. Lalrozama, R. Malsawingluanga scored for Mizoram, while only Tai Bharath, Taying Antony, Techi Takar could convert for Arunachal. — Special Correspondent
