Education scheme for the physically challenged soon

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will soon come out with a comprehensive scheme for providing educational facilities for handicapped people, Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac told the Assembly on Wednesday.

Intervening in the reply to a submission by Simon Rodrigues Britto (CPI-M), the Finance Minister said the Finance and Education departments would discuss the matter and come out with the scheme very soon.

Health care

Earlier, Health and Social Welfare Minister P. K. Sreemathy told Mr. Britto that the Government would consider enhancing the healthcare assistance to physically challenged persons to Rs.10,000.

The Government, she said, was also planning to implement three specific schemes to mark the golden jubilee of the State's formation for the benefit of physically challenged persons. Of this, Rs.80 lakh would be spent for Endosulfan victims of Kasaragod, Rs.50 lakh in Kollam and Rs.50 lakh in Palakkad, she said.

Replying to another submission by P. Jayarajan (CPI-M), Power Minister A. K. Balan said the Government would take steps to give postings to the 116 persons who had been recruited as assistant civil engineers and subsequently retrenched from service by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
