Sonia's Prime Ministerial choice

New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi tonight said that Manmohan Singh was her Prime Ministerial choice even in 1999 when she had staked claim to form the government after the fall of Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led coalition Government.

``I think so,'' she told NDTV in an interview when she was asked whether Dr.Singh would have been the Prime Minister if her attempt to form a government had succeeded in 1999.

Ms.Gandhi said ``yes, in fact I went first by myself and second time with Dr Singh. Yes, that is true.''

Ms.Gandhi also said when the 2004 election results started coming she had spoken to Dr.Singh about his becoming the Prime Minister.

``Yes, I did. I did speak to him,'' she said.

After 2004 election results were out, Congress Parliamentary Party met and elected her as the Prime Ministerial candidate, which she declined and nominated Dr.Singh. — PTI
