VISAKHAPATNAM: Three boys were drowned in sea at RK Beach opposite the Kali temple here on Wednesday.

According to the police, five boys from the Kailasapuram area in the city went to the beach in the afternoon. Four of them knew swimming and they ventured into the water while the fifth stayed back as he could not swim.

The sea was rough and the current strong. While one of the four returned to the shore, the remaining three - Sravan (15), Appalaraju (14) and Satish (12) -- were pulled by the currents and drawn into the deep sea and were drowned.

"Four of the five boys are school dropouts while Satish was studying in Std. IX at a school in his area. Their parents are all khalasis and labourers. As it was a holiday on account of Ramzan, he went to the beach along with his friends," Three Town CI A. Narasimha Murthy said.

On hearing the news, parents and relatives of the boys rushed to the beach and cried inconsolably. A pall of gloom descended on the beach with a large number of women wailing and cursing their fate.

Two rescue teams were deployed to search for the missing boys but the team members had to return after going some distance as the sea was very rough.

"The bodies could not be traced till late in the night. We have alerted all police stations in the city, particularly those along the coast," Mr. Murthy said.

About half-a-dozen drowning cases have been reported so far this year.
