NEW DELHI: Despite clear instructions from the Union Ministry of Finance to speed up the process of income tax refunds to assessees, the authorities at Mayur Bhavan here have not been able to process the cases of thousands of taxpayers because of delay in installation of a new software system being put up there. A case in point is Ward 46(3) in which there are about 30,000 assessees. Since this ward has still not been connected to the new computerised system, thousands of people are still awaiting their refunds for the previous assessment year 2005-06. As for the assessment year 2006-07, the processing of refunds is yet to start. The installation of the new system was supposed to help the staff in quickly going through the income tax returns filed by the assesses. But this new Airtel system has so far not even made its presence felt in this ward. As such the staff is forced to seek the help of colleagues in other wards to carry out their routines work at their work stations. However, this has hardly helped matters. Since other wards have to do their own work, the sharing mechanism has not been yielding much result. The staff is peeved that so far nothing has been done to improve the office infrastructure and despite all the hype about India entering the new millennium and new technology easing the life of the public, they are yet to see the benefit of the automation campaign.
