NEW DELHI: After a gap of four days, the dreaded dengue claimed one more life as a teenager from Uttar Pradesh breathed his last at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Tuesday night. With this, 47 people have so far succumbed to the viral disease in the Capital even as new patients continue to pour in at different hospitals across the city. Thirteen-year-old Ashish, a resident of Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh, was admitted to AIIMS on October 16. However, his condition deteriorated as he developed dengue haemorrhagic fever, a more serious version of dengue fever. Ashish died late on Tuesday night, said a senior AIIMS official. During the past 24 hours, nearly 100 new patients were admitted to various city hospitals, including 43 at AIIMS, 32 at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and 21 at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. At least 184 dengue patients have so far been admitted to AIIMS, while 30 people have been kept under observation at the institute. However, as per municipal health officials, only 60-odd patients were reported since Tuesday, clearly indicating lack of coordination between the civic body and city hospitals. According to a civic body release, so far only 18 dengue deaths have been confirmed -- 10 from other States and eight from Delhi, while 24 suspected dengue deaths -- 12 each from Delhi and other States, have taken place. So far 2,216 patients -- 1405 from Delhi and 811 from other States -- have been treated in the Capital. Belying all hopes of health officials in the Capital that falling temperatures might contain spread of dengue disease, there has been no drop in the number of new patients being admitted to hospitals. While 53 fresh cases were reported on Monday, 69 were admitted on Tuesday. With nearly 100 cases being reported during the past 24 hours, there are clear indications that the dreaded disease is still spreading in the Capital as well as neighbouring States.
