`The Inheritance of Loss' tops the chart

The Inheritance of Loss is fast gaining in popularity in Kozhikode. Not surprisingly, Kiran Desai's Booker Prize-winning novel is the hottest selling book in English fiction in the city at the moment.

"The sales have picked up after the book's paperback editions arrived a couple of days ago," says M. Sidharthan, regional manager, DC Books. "Earlier, only the hardbound edition was available and since it was expensively priced, there were not too many takers for that. We could have sold even more had we got the paperback edition a few days earlier." "Within two days, about 25 books were sold, which is pretty good."

Desai's book, however, looks unlikely to rival the popularity of The God of Small Things. "We had sold more 2,500 copies of that book in Kozhikode alone," says Sidharthan.
