General Hospital to get oncology wing

Staff Reporter

To be set up at a cost of Rs. 3 crores

KURNOOL: Minister for Health and Finance K. Rosaiah recently said an oncology wing would be set up at a cost of Rs 3 crores at General Hospital here with the financial assistance from the Centre.

Responding to the representation from the junior doctors over deficiencies in the services at General Hospital, the Minister deputued Health Secretary P.K. Agarwal to visit the hospital and hold discussions with the junior doctors and heads of departments.

Mr. Rosaiah promised to sanction Rs. 1 crore during the financial year for purchase of critical equipment in the hospital. He said minor equipment would be replaced immediately.

Later, Mr. Agarwal visited the hospital and convened a meeting with junior doctors and the hospital authorities. He promised to bring all issues to the notice of the Government for suitable action and asked the professors and junior doctors to work in perfect coordination.

He attributed the junior doctors' protest to underlying deep dissatisfaction rather than to lack of mechanism to resolve the issues.

He advised the junior doctors to take up their problems with the appropriate authorities instead of giving call for an agitation, which would bring disrepute to the institute.

Earlier, the CPI activists staged a demonstration at the state guesthouse where the Health Minister was staying to draw his attention to the problem of chikungunya. CPI city secretary K. Jagannatham said the disease was a serious burden on the poor families who lost employment and incurred huge medical bills.

The Minister disputed with the claim of the CPI leader that in a number of cases, the entire family was affected by chikungunya.
