Goods transport to Manipur hit

Correspondent

IMPHAL: As truck drivers have stopped plying along National Highway 39 since Wednesday protesting against lack of security, LPG cylinders, petrol, diesel and other essential commodities are in short supply in Manipur.

Most of the oil pumps have been closed.

A number of drivers and cleaners have been injured in attacks by protesters who are using catapults and the like.

H. Kulamani, president, All-Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union, says that on the one hand various groups in Nagaland have been demanding huge illegal taxes. On the other, an all-Manipur committee has imposed an economic blockade along national highways demanding employment to children of employees who died in harness.

As the Government provides escort to loaded trucks, which are stranded at the Mao gate on Manipur's border, the agitationists have said they will destroy even empty vehicles which are leaving the State to fetch commodities.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi says it is not possible to make appointments as demanded by the committee because of a policy decision.
