Officers told to report vacancies

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that the State Government will take stern action against officers who fail to report vacancies in their departments.

Replying to a submission by A. Pradeep Kumar (CPI-M) in the Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Government had issue a stern warning in this regard to all officers concerned and the Cabinet had reviewed the matter later. The present Government had so far reported 16,614 vacancies, he added.

The Chief Minister said the Government would not also permit any officer to appoint staff on casual basis.

Offering clarifications to the Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman's statement that Health and Education departments were the worst offenders when it came to reporting vacancies to the commission, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy said 80 per cent of the vacancies not reported to the PSC were of part-time sweepers, which need not be reported as these were to be filled through promotions. The Government would soon notify the special rules for the purpose and grant promotions to eligible persons as Grade I and Grade II nursing assistants.

Education Minister M.A. Baby said his department would also take all steps necessary to avert backdoor recruitment of any kind.
