MANILA: Bulusan volcano in the central Philippines spewed mud and ash on Thursday, as authorities warned local residents that a life-threatening lahar (sludge composed of pyroclastic material and water) flow might be triggered by heavy rain. At least four families were evacuated to safer ground on Thursday morning to avoid the danger around Bulusan volcano, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) of Sorsogon said in a press release. The Bulusan volcano, 360 km to the southeast of Manila, spewed mud and ash on Thursday for the second time this week, but scientists said there was no need to raise the alert status. A report in Inquirer news network said that the affected families lived on the banks of the Cogon river, which had been silted by past lahar flows. Xinhua
