KOLLAM: District Medical Officer Elizabeth John Zacharia said five cases of chikungunya were reported from the district on Thursday. All the five were under treatment at a private hospital. None of the cases were serious. While three cases of dengue fever in the district were reported on Wednesday, no case was reported on Thursday, the DMO said. The district committee of the Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation said in a statement that fever was spreading across the coastal areas of the city. There were cases of fever in almost all the houses of the area. The patients were also experiencing relapses. The statement alleged that the mosquito control programme launched in the wake of the epidemic outburst was implemented in the coastal areas in a haphazard manner.
