NEW DELHI: Backed by better sales and realisations, Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) on Thursday reported a 40 per cent rise in its net profit for the quarter ended September 30, 2006. The company made a net profit of Rs. 367.40 crore during the quarter under review against Rs. 262.60 crore in the same period last year. Total income (net of excise) grew by 12.5 per cent to Rs. 3,540.80 crore from Rs. 3,146.80 crore. Sales have risen by 12.1 per cent to 1.58 lakh vehicles from 1.40 lakh units in July-September 2005. The company has experienced higher realisations as sales of models like `Swift' and the new `WagonR' have been healthy, contributing better margins. The earnings (before interest, depreciation and taxation) margins in the second quarter this fiscal were up at 17.6 per cent against 15.2 per cent. In the first half of the current fiscal, MUL's net profit shot up by 50.6 per cent to Rs. 737 crore from Rs. 489.10 crore in the same period last year. Total income (net of excise) in April-September 2006 moved up by 16 per cent to Rs. 6,809.60 crore from Rs. 5,870.50 crore. Vehicle sales in the first half have moved up by 15.2 per cent to 3.02 lakh units from 2.62 lakh units in the same period last year.
