Civic body representatives take oath

  • Villagers swarm village panchayat office at Keerapakkam
  • Police cleared the demonstrators using mild force

KANCHEEPURAM : The swearing-in of elected representatives to local bodies in Kancheepuram district went off peacefully, barring a minor incident of picketing by residents of Keerapakkam village in Kattankulathur Panchayat Union.

Reports said that the villagers swarmed into the village panchayat office at Keerapakkam when the officially declared winner - Mr.Rajendran - was about to take an oath of office at around 10 a.m. The demonstrators alleged that Mr. Rajendran had been declared the winner without conducting a draw as he and another contestant for the Panchayat President post - Mr.Harikrishnan - had bagged 489 votes each. They tried to stall the swearing-in ceremony, but in vain. Mr. Rajendran assumed office after the police cleared the demonstrators.
