THINKING BIG: Students at the counselling session on higher education, organised by the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre at the Birla Planetarium on Monday.
CHENNAI : Students showed great enthusiasm in knowing more about the possible courses they could pursue after schooling, at a counselling session organised by the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre on Monday. Over 100 Plus-Two students from rural schools in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Thiruvannamalai districts took part in the event. Susila Mariappan, Director of University Students Advisory Bureau, University of Madras, urged the students to have a broad vision while choosing their courses. "Engineering and medicine are not the only options, there are several other avenues," she said. She elaborated on the different entrance examinations students would need to prepare for, if they planned to pursue courses in law, nursing and agriculture. She highlighted the courses available in paramedical sciences, which were gaining significance. "Do not give up if you don't get to study medicine. There are a whole lot of courses in subjects such as pharmaceuticals and physiotherapy, which are in a great demand today," she said. Ms.Mariappan also spoke on the different branches of chemistry, physics and biology such as industrial chemistry, biochemistry, textile chemistry, astrophysics, nuclear physics, biotechnology, bioinformatics and genetics, which could be pursued as specialisations at post-graduate level as well.
Avenues
Speaking on the avenues for students of the commerce stream, she said B.Com company secretaryship, chartered accountancy and management helped students find good jobs. After an interactive session, Ms.Mariappan said she was pleasantly surprised by the background work students had done. P. Iyamperumal, executive director of the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, said the programme was aimed at spreading awareness among students from rural areas. The programme also included sessions on employment and availability of student loans.
