Palanisamy to take oath on Sunday

CHENNAI: Member of the Legislative Assembly from Coimbatore East N. Palanisamy will be sworn in as Minister for Rural Industries at 4 p.m. on Sunday (October 29) at Raj Bhavan, according to a press release from Raj Bhavan. — Staff Reporter

Train services resume

Udhagamandalam: Train services on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) line between Coonoor and Mettupalayam resumed on Thursday.

According to Coonoor Station Manager G. Saravanan, the services had remained suspended between October 21and 25 following landslips near Kallar. — Special Correspondent

TASMAC staff seek 20 per cent bonus

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu TASMAC Employees Union on Thursday urged the State Government to sanction 20 per cent bonus and 5 per cent incentive to the employees.

Expressing disappointment over the 10 per cent bonus announced, the union, in its memorandum to the Government, said the corporation was earning a huge profit and hence it was proper to sanction 20 per cent bonus.

The memorandum also demanded regularisation of services, time-scale, fixed working hours and weekly holiday for the employees. — Special Correspondent

Vaiko's appeal to Prime Minister

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene in the issue of Sri Lankan naval forces attacking Indian fishermen.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, a copy of which was released to the press, he said the Sri Lankan naval force "unnecessarily fired" on Indian fishermen from Rameswaram near Katchatheevu on Thursday.

Nearly 3,000 fishermen were affected due to the firing, with which the Sri Lankan force created unwanted fear among the fishing community.

Such attacks from the Sri Lankan side, he said, had become regular and wanton. — Staff Reporter

Chairmen candidates

Erode: The Communist of Party of India has selected S. T. Prabhakaran, elected from Ward 11 of Periya Semur Municipality, to contest the Municipal chairman post. The post has been allotted to the party. Likewise, K. R. Thirunavukkarasu and S. Ponnuchamy will contest for the chairmanships of Perundurai Union and Chennimalai Union respectively, said N. Periasamy, district secretary of the party. The election for the posts will be held on October 28. - Staff Reporter

Fatal fall

SALEM: A worker was killed when he fell from the third floor of a building, which was under construction, here recently.

The police said Ramasundaram (16) of Melparaikkadu sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, where he died. - Staff Reporter

Gun seized

YERCAUD: The Salem district police seized a country-made gun from a person in Kolahur near here recently. The police said following information, the police raided a house and seized the gun. They arrested Mathaian (47) for possessing the gun without having proper license.

Rice distributed

SALEM: The Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam recently distributed 2.5 kg of rice free of cost to 488 families each in connection with Ramzan. - Staff Reporter

Sensitisation programme

Krishnagiri: A sensitisation programme on farmers clubs for bankers was organised by NABARD at the Sericulture Research and Training Institute in Hosur on Thursday. During the programme, bankers were told about the benefits of forming farmers club. The NABARD Assistant General Manager, V. Thirumalai, said that farmers clubs acted as a bridge between bankers and people.

Rain lashes Karur

KARUR: The district registered a total of 171.30 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Rainfall (in mm) registered in various places are as follows: Anaipalayam (28.30), Thogamalai (20), Krishnarayapuram (18.10),Mayanur (18), Aravakurichi (17).

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 94.43 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 8,313 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Congress candidate

Nagercoil: Since the DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, has allotted Nagercoil municipality to the Congress, Ashokan Solomon is likely to be announced by the party as the candidate for the post of chairman of municipal council.

The DMK has nominated the vice-chairmanship to its party candidate Simon Rajan, said the DMK district secretary and Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan.

The DMK has also appointed members for various committees.
