GULBARGA: The district unit of the Congress on Thursday threatened to launch an agitation if the Government fails to go ahead with the decision of the previous Dharam Singh Government to sanction a government medical college in Gulbarga city from next academic year. Reacting sharply to the statement of Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya that there was no such proposal for medical college, the newly-appointed president of the District Congress Committee Allamprabhu Patil and former Minister Qamarul Islam said Acharya's statement was in contradiction to the earlier statement of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. This revealed the hidden agenda of the State Government to neglect Gulbarga in development activities. Mr.Patil said the previous Dharam Singh Government had issued a notification in this regard and had also changed the plans of the 1,000-bed hospital under construction in the city to meet the norms of the Medical Council of India (MCI) for establishing a medical college in Gulbarga city. The previous Government had also provided funds for changes in the proposed hospital building, for which the foundation stone was laid by Mr. Kumaraswamy recently. He said the Medical Education Minister should retract his statement and clarify his position. He warned that if the Government went back on the proposal, the Congress would launch a sustained agitation in the district.
Convention
Mr Patil said that on October 29, a district-level workers' convention would be organised.
