1 more dengue death in Delhi

  • MCD asked to step up anti-larva operations in all zones
  • Minister expresses concern over rise in cases in central zone

    NEW DELHI: The dengue death toll in the capital has gone up to 48 with with Sone Lal (50) of Patparganj in East Delhi succumbing to the virus in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here in the past 24 hours.

    With over 77 new patients admitted to various hospitals, the number of cases has reached 2,293.

    AIIMS Medical Superintendent D.K. Sharma said, "Sone Lal died due to dengue haemorrhagic fever. He was admitted to the AIIMS in a critical condition at 8-30 a.m. on Wednesday and he died within five hours. Altogether 179 dengue patients have been admitted to the hospital and 25 others kept under observation. Forty patients were discharged after recovery in the 24 hours ended 8 a.m. Thursday."

    As fresh cases were reported, Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri has asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to step up anti-larva operations in all zones. He chaired a review meeting.

    In Delhi, out of the 2,293 cases reported so far, 1,442 are from the capital itself and the others are from Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

    According to official figures,18 deaths have been reported and 25 others are suspected deaths. Confirmation is still awaited.

    The Minister expressed his concern over the increasing number of dengue cases in the central zone and directed the civic body to strengthen the services there by providing more work force and equipment to the zone.

    Several cases of dengue have been reported from Tuglakabad, Okhla and Badarpur areas of the central zone.

    The other zones, which have reported a large number of dengue cases, are Shahdara (North) 182, Shahdara (South) 156, Rohini 116, West Zone 103 and Najafgarh 161.
