Swamy disputes Sonia's claim
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Janata party president Subramanian Swamy has disputed the claim of Congress president Sonia Gandhi that she wanted Manmohan Singh to be the Prime Minister even in 1999, when the NDA Government was toppled. He was responding to her observation in a television interview.
In a statement issued here, Dr. Swamy said, "as a key figure in organising the fall of the NDA Government then, I can say that Ms. Gandhi betrayed all of us when she rushed to the Rashtrapathi Bhavan and made a laughable claim that she had the support of 272 MPs."
He said: "when I organised the famous tea party, Ms. Gandhi had been told that certain parties would not accept any Congress-led Government. But after the 272 MPs claim, Ms. Gandhi told me that Harkishan Singh Surjeet and her CWC wanted her to stake the claim to head a Congress Government alone, or go for elections. This was a betrayal of the understanding with the Opposition parties before the fall of the NDA Government."
