ANANTAPUR: Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandareeswari has stressed on the need for planning insurance policies aimed at the small and marginal farming community and rural population who comprised 70 per cent of the country's population. She was speaking at the Kadapa division meeting of LIC Agents' Federation of India here on Thursday.
On the growth path
She said insurance sector was growing rapidly in the country and it was the second largest insurance sector in the world behind China. Insurance sector of the country was competing with China now and it was likely to overtake the latter in next few years. She complimented the role of LIC agents in the growth of the sector in the country but their welfare and development were being neglected all along. They were playing a key role in the growth of LIC in the face of stiff competition from private insurance companies. She said the LIC was providing social security to people in the country with its policies (schemes). Stating that human resources were abundant in the country it was the country's major strength, Ms. Purandareeswari said planning policies of the country were being based on them.
PF coverage
Responding to a memorandum submitted by the LIC agents on their demands like provision for provident fund coverage and group insurance coverage, the Minister said she would take up the matter with the Minister concerned and would raise the issue in Parliament also. Anantapur MP A. Venkatarami Reddy, LIC officials of Kadapa division and office-bearers of LIC Agents' Federation spoke. Later, speaking to newspersons, the Minister said that there were 1.35 crore school dropouts in the country and the Government was implementing Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for enrolling them back into schooling.
Rs. 1,300 crores for SSA
Andhra Pradesh was sanctioned Rs. 1,300 crores for SSA for five years, she said. On the request of Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha for funds to improve infrastructure in schools, she promised to take up the plea for funds for construction of school buildings and basic amenities like toilets with officials concerned.
