ANANTAPUR: State president of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham (APRS) affiliated to CPI K. Ramakrishna has said that the impact of drought conditions on villages in the district has already been severe this year. He urged the Government to come to the rescue of the farmers, farm workers and labourers. Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, he stated that crop failure due to scanty rainfall, scarcity of fodder and drinking water, migration in search of livelihood and erratic power supply to farm sector had made life miserable in the villages. In spite of Government claims NREGS works were not taken up in several villages and those in need of wage employment were forced to migrate to urban areas, he noted. A team of APRS and Andhra Pradesh Gorrela Pempakamdarula Sangham was visiting villages in the district since Wednesday as part of Rythu Rakshana Jatha taken up by APRS. People were pouring out their problems before the team during the visit, he said. The team was shocked to know that rice under PDS was not supplied in some villages even as the month was coming to an end, he said. While the scanty rainfall had affected the rain-fed crops, erratic power supply to farm sector was resulting in withering of irrigated crops under bore wells and orchards. The APRS leader suggested that writing of loans of farmers up to Rs.1 lakh would only bail them out from the crisis. The Rythu Rakshana Jatha was commenced from Tirupati, Nellore, Adilabad and Srikakulam on October 23 and they would culminate at Hyderabad on October 30 and a maha dharna would be staged on October 31.
