OUTRAGED: Members of the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti and Congress leaders protesting against the defiling of an Ambedkar statue, in Hubli on Thursday.

HUBLI: Scores of activists of the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti along with several Congress leaders took out a protest march here on Thursday in protest against the reported defiling of a statue of B.R. Ambedkar in Ichalkaranji in Sangli district of Maharashtra.

The protestors began their march from the Ambedkar Statue opposite the Head Post Office and concluded their protest at the Kittur Channamma Circle.

Addressing the protestors,DSS leaders alleged that no stringent action was being taken against those found guilty of defiling the statues, and said this had encouraged others to indulge in similar acts.

They said incidences of exploitation of Dalits had increased owing to lack of action against the perpetrators. They urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to arrange for suitable protection for the statues of Ambedkar across the country and take measures to punish those who defile the statues.

Appropriate compensation should be given to the families of Dalits exploited by the upper caste and the district administration and Police Department should take steps to protect Dalit families, they added.

Former Mayor Anilkumar Patil, Congress leader Prasad Abbaiah, DSS Dharwad district unit president Maruit Doddamani, Umesh Hosmani, Prabhu Prakhakar, Arun Chalavadi, B. Shivakumar, Ganesh Doddamani, Raju Ganadal and others led the protest march.

The protestors submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister to the Hubli tahsildar who visited the venue of the agitation.
