KOLKATA: Launching the Kolkata edition of The Hindu Business Line — the 14th in the country — West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on Thursday "the priorities and activities of the media should be attuned to the needs of the people."

"Competition [in the media] is welcome if it remains on the right track ... the West Bengal Government welcomes criticism which helps promote the interests of the people and it is for the media to protect the multi-religious, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic identity of India," Mr. Bhattacharjee said.

"The Hindu Business Line group holds a special place in Indian journalism as it sincerely pursues the mission of promoting the interests of our country," Mr. Bhattacharjee noted.

``Very good decision''

At a time when the State Government was trying to facilitate growth in industry and inviting investment from overseas and within the country, and the State was witnessing a retail boom "the launch of Business Line is a very good decision which will help the business community in the State and effectively serve the needs of our people in the corporate sector," Mr. Bhattacharjee said.

B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel, said Business Line was being launched in West Bengal at a time the State was making "a remarkable turnaround" in terms of "investment climate, the work environment and a bureaucracy which is working."

N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu and Business Line, said the launch was a "special occasion" for The Hindu group of publications. "Historically, this will be our first footprint in the great metropolitan centre of Kolkata and in an exciting region with abundant natural and human resources and tremendous development potential," he remarked.

Proposing a vote of thanks, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu group of publications, said the launch "could not have come at a better time as Kolkata and West Bengal are justifiably seeing a great resurgence in industrial and commercial activity."
