Rafat in roaring form

Erode: Rafat Habib of SRSA came good with three century breaks in the Group 'A' league of the fourth Chinthamani memorial open snooker tournament at the SS Sports Academy here on Thursday.

Incidentally, this is the first time in Tamil Nadu that a player has achieved this rare feat in a single tournament.

Rafat got the century breaks during his games over Gowtham of Madurai, Saravanan (SS) and Chakravarthy of Tirupur. Rafat won 82-10, 85-10, 101-0 over Gowtham, defeated Saravanan 82-15, 65-25, 114-0 and then beat Chakravarthy 101-0, 65-21, 82-10.

The results: Group `A': M. Saravanan (SS) bt Gowtham (Madurai) 3-0. Group `B': Varunkumar (TNBSA) bt Mahesh (TNSC) 3-1. Group `D': Kamalchawla (MP) bt Kailash (SS) 3-0. Group `E': S.H. Kamaraj (TNBSA) bt M. Senthil (Madurai) 3-1; S.H. Kamaraj (TNBSA) bt Vijaynichani (CBA) 3-0; S.H. Kamaraj (TNBSA) bt R. Murugesh (SS) 3-0. Group `F': S. Loganathan (PS) bt Saravanan (TNBSA) 3-0; S. Loganathan (PS) bt Umakanth (SS) 3-1.

Balasubramanian in semifinals

Defending champion A. Balasubramanian of Thanjavur entered the men's singles semifinals of the LIC South Zone carrom tournament at Madurai on Thursday.

The results (quarterfinals): Men: A. Balasubramanian bt M. Srinivasan (Coimbatore) 25-2, 25-4; S. Sundarajan (Madurai) bt Kuberan (Chennai) 25-19, 25-0: Kathirvelu (Coimbatore) bt Mohan (Chennai) 25-12, 25-0. Women: S. Mythili (Chennai) bt V. Nirmala (Coimbatore) 25-0, 25-0; R. Malathi (Coimbatore) bt S. Shenbagavalli (Tirunelveli) 25-3, 25-1; N. Padmini (Chennai) bt Chithra (Thanjavur) 20-25, 25-0, 25-0.

Nilgiris advances

At Dindigul, Nilgiris and Tiruvallur entered the quarterfinals of the 29th Tamil Nadu State junior inter-district football championship for the T.P. Ramasamy Pillai Cup, organised by Solar Sports Club, defeating Cuddalore 1-0 and Trichy 5-4 (via tie-breaker) at Nilakottai on Thursday.

LDC wins title

Lady Doak College beat Thiagarajar Arts College 3-2 via tie-breaker for the title in the Madurai Kamaraj University women's football tournament at Madurai on Thursday.

In the tie-breaker, Shirli, Lassia and Mahalakshmi scored for Lady Doak College. Vizhimalar and Fathima scored for Thiagarajar College.

Lawrence wins again

Lawrence School scored a six-wicket win over Stanes in the NDCA under-13 inter-school cricket tournament for the Selai Gowder memorial rolling trophy at the St. Joseph's grounds in Udhagamandalam on Thursday.

The scores: Stanes 102 for seven in 30 overs lost to Lawrence 104 for four in 23.1 overs (Amrit Garg 45 not out).
