EMINENT LINE-UP: (From left, front row) Rajiv Kaul, Chairman, Nicco Group; R.S. Lodha, Chairman, Birla Corporation; H. Jha of Tata Steel; Pavan Ruia, Chairman, Ruia Group; Sanjay Budhia, Chairman of Patton and R.P. Goenka, Chairman, RPG Group, among others at the launch of the Kolkata edition of The Hindu Business Line on Thursday.
Kolkata: As Business Line launched its 14th edition with what was described by N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu group of publications, as the "first footprints in the metropolitan region of Kolkata," the evening turned out to be a delightful mix of introspective comments on the ethical standards of journalism as well as fun and humour. That Business Line, which occupies the second spot among financial dailies in the country, is respected for its factual and analytical reporting became clear through an audio-visual presentation, which showed the doyens of Indian industry feting it as their financial newspaper of choice. While K.V. Kamath, Chairman, ICICI Bank, said he trusted Business Line for its credibility, N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys, said it was an essential component of the portfolio of newspapers he read every morning.
Buddhadeb wants The Hindu in Kolkata
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, while articulating the demand for an edition of The Hindu in Kolkata, mentioned that he had already discussed the possibility when he met Mr. Ram in Chennai earlier this year. "I had mentioned this in the presence of Mrs. Ram, and even she agreed," Mr. Bhattacharjee said. While appreciating the meticulous standards of Business Line, a financial paper that did not resort to cheap tricks or sensationalism, B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel, said there were a number of other reasons why he agreed to attend the function.
Cricketing days
Reminiscing about his experience of leading the IIT-Madras cricket team while Mr. Ram was an aggressive opener for the rival Presidency College team, he mentioned how he had caught a fierce square cut from Mr. Ram in the gully, in the process losing a few teeth. "Ram is not likely to remember the incident, as they were my teeth," Mr. Muthuraman added, to an uproar of laughter from the audience. The evening also saw the launch of a collection of essays written by B.S. Raghavan, titled Call of the 21st Century and other Essays, published by the ICFAI University Press, Hyderabad.
