Three girls drowned in Nagavali river

VIZIANAGARAM: Three girls who went for a holy dip in the Nagavali river in Basangi village of Jiyyammavalasa mandal in Vizianagaram district on Thursday were drowned. The bodies of D. Sailaja, 11, and M. Shyamala washed ashore while that of P. Santhoshikrishnaveni is yet to be recovered.

About 20 school children went to the river for a dip on the occasion of Nagulachavithi. Correspondent

Pipe mines unearthed

WARANGAL: The special police in the district recovered a large number of pipe mines from a dump near a road between Narasapur of Tadvai mandal and Damerathogu in Khammam district here on Thursday. The dump consisted of four big pipe mines, 25 small pipe mines and 400 gelatine sticks. Villagers who found the dump informed the police who detonated them. - Staff Reporter

New finance director for NMDC

HYDERABAD: K.R. Venkateswarlu has joined the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) as Director, Finance. He was Executive Director, Finance, of Ranchi-based Mecon prior to this. Mr. Venkateswarlu has 33 years of experience across the disciplines of engineering, finance and management in Mecon and Hindustan Steel Ltd. earlier. - Special Correspondent

Nizam Sugar Factory office ransacked

Sangareddy: Angry sugarcane farmers ransacked the Deccan Nizam Sugar Factory office in Mambojopalli near Medak town on Thursday. More than 200 farmers from Medak, Tekmal, Peddasankarmpet, Ramayampet and Yeldurty mandals, who were demanding commensurate price for the sugarcane, broke the furniture and flowerpots following heated argument with labour Welfare officer Bhaskar Rao. - Staff Reporter

Interpol help sought to nab `fraudster'

Sangareddy: The Medak police is seeking the help of the Interpol to track down Akula Srinivas, son of realtor Akula Rajaiah, in connection with a cheating case pending on him in the district.

Srinivas is said to be living in the USA. He was needed in connection with a case (190/05) under Section 420 for selling land admeasuring 200 square yards to more than one person in Muthangi after acquiring a GPA. . - Staff Reporter

HAL chief visits avionics division

Hyderabad: The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) chairman, Ashok K.Baweja, and the directors of HAL visited the Avionics division here on Thursday. During the two-day visit to the division, Mr. Baweja went round the manufacturing shops. - Special Correspondent

Cotton trading begins at Adilabad market

ADILABAD: Trading in cotton started in the Adilabad agriculture market on Thursday with the price pegged at Rs. 2,031 per quintal for A grade cotton. Collector R. Boy drowned

KADAPA: A five-year-old boy Gangiti Vamsikrishna of K. Agraharam in Khajipet mandal was accidentally drowned in a waterhole in Vakkileru stream near the village on Thursday. Locals pulled out the boy from the waterhole but he died by then. - Staff Reporter

ID arrack seized

KADAPA: Excise personnel seized 35 litres of ID arrack and destroyed 1,840 litres of jaggery wash in Chinnamandem mandal on Thursday. Two persons — Jangeti Lakshmaiah and Manyapu Subbamma — were arrested in raids in Devalampeta and Puthalavandlapalle, according to excise CI Pratap Reddy. - Staff Reporter

Subabul plantation

CHITTOOR: The Joint Director of Animal Husbandry has said that subabul plantation will be taken up in 3,000 acres of Government wasteland to help farmers overcome fodder shortage. He formally launched the scheme by planting a sapling at Beerappa tank in Vinayakapuram village on Thursday. Subabul saplings had been planted in 60 acres in Punganur and Chowdepalle mandals. - Correspondent

Jana Reddy coming today

ELURU: Home Minister K. Jana Reddy will visit West Godavari district on Friday, according to an official press release.

Mr. Reddy will arrive from Kaikaluru to Denduluru Assembly constituency in the district to take part in various developmental programmes, which included inauguration of police quarters at Pedavegi. Later, he will hold a review meeting with senior police officials on law and order situation in the district in the city. - Staff Reporter

Training camp for eSeva staff

Kakinada: A training camp for e-seva centres' staff was organised on the Ideal college campus here on Thursday. P Chiranjivini Kumari, Correspondent, Ideal colleges, participating as chief guest, advised the participants to render better service taking into account the condition of the consumers. Suraparaju, training incharge, presided. Suryanarayana Murthy, training manager, said the e-seva staff should have awareness on personality development, communication skills, stress management and public relations. Adjudged best technical squadron

Kakinada: The 19(A) Air Squadron (T) NCC unit has been adjudged All India best technical squadron at the All India Vayu Sainik camp held at Bangalore from October 5 to16, according to unit commanding officer Wing Commander G Srinivas. The unit also stood first in Drill and Skeet shooting competitions. Cadet Y V Narendra of the unit has topped in the skeet shooting. Wing Commander claimed that it was for the first time that the unit has achieved the top position in the all India camp ever since its inception. - Correspondent

Minister's visit

Srikakulam: Minister for Revenue and Relief Dharmana Prasada Rao will come on a two-day visit of the district on Sunday.
