New nursing colleges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Thursday decided to start two nursing colleges attached to Alappuzha and Thrissur medical colleges.

The classes would be started this year itself subject to clearance from the Nursing Council. There will be 60 seats for B. Sc. (Nursing) in each of the colleges. The Cabinet also decided to recommend the proroguing of the Assembly session to the Governor. — Special Correspondent

Assembly adjourned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Assembly adjourned sine die on Thursday after being in session for more than a month.

Twenty-one days of sittings was mainly devoted to passing the budgetary demands for grants and supplementary demands for the current year and the corresponding appropriation bills. — Special Correspondent

Government submission

Kochi: The State Government on Thursday informed the High Court that Christian and Muslim communities were minority communities as defined under the new self-financing professional colleges Act. The Government made the submission while answering a question put forward by a Division Bench. — PTI

Bharathan awards announced

Thrissur: The Bharathan Awards for 2005 have been announced. Lal Jose (`Achanurangatha Veedu'), Pradeep (`Daivanamathil'), and Saiju Kurup (`Mayookham') have been selected for the Awards for the best director, art director and debut performer respectively. Salim Kumar has won the Special Jury Mention for his performance in `Achanurangatha Veedu'. The awards, instituted by the Bharathan Cinema Academy, will be presented at a function here on November 18, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Science expo at Pandalam college

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the NSS College, Pandalam, will organise a science exhibition at the college from November 1 to 4. According to Ajitha M. Nair and K.S. Ushadevi, schoolchildren from different parts of the district will participate in the four-day exhibition, `Chemthrill-2006.' Kerala Metals and Minerals Limited, Chavara, CPCRI, Kayamkulam and the Rubber Research Institute in Kottayam will also participate. — Staff Reporter

Software kits distributed

KOLLAM: As part of its social service programme, the Rotary Club of Quilon West, in association with the Federation of the Blind, has embarked upon a scheme to give the blind a better life. On October 25, visually challenged students were given computer software kits. The kits were distributed by the Rotary assistant district governor Janardhanan Kumbalathu.

On Thursday, secretary of the club M. Ajit Kumar inaugurated a camp in which blind persons will receive special training on soap manufacturing.

Students plan stir

Thrissur: The Association of B.Tech. Old Scheme Students of Calicut University has threatened to launch an agitation in protest against refusal by the authorities to conduct examinations under the old scheme. Students who pursued the B.Tech. course in 1999-2003 fall under the old scheme. The university changed the B.Tech. syllabus in 2000.

Film fete begins today

Thrissur: The Third International Film Festival of Thrissur will begin here on October 27. Filmmaker Bharatiraja will inaugurate the week-long festival. In all, 125 films will be screened, according to Cherian Joseph, executive director of the festival.

Principal hospitalised

Thrissur: K. Jayanarayanan, 48, Principal of Vivekananda College, was on Thursday admitted to a private hospital in Kunnamkulam after being assaulted by a gang, according to the police.
