Commission on child rights planned

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is planning to have a State-level Commission on Protection of Child Rights, P.K. Sreemathy, Health and Social Welfare Minister, told the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a submission by K.K. Shylaja (CPI-M), the Minister said the Government was also contemplating various measures to check indecent depiction of women in posters and publications and prevention of child abuses.

The Health Minister told Therambil Ramakrishnan (Congress) that the draft proposal for the proposed medical university was ready. The Government has, however, not taken the decision as to where it should be located.

Education Minister M.A. Baby informed C.T. Ahamedali (IUML) that the Government had secured Rs.3.38 crore from the Centre since August this year to provide assistance for renovation of madrassas. During 2004-05, the Centre had sanctioned only Rs.82 lakh for the purpose.

Mr. Baby told Babu Prasad (Congress) that the Government would study the demand for change in the working hours of higher secondary schools, which now had six-day week following adoption of the NCERT [National Council for Educational Research and Training] syllabus.

The Government would take steps to notify the service rules of ministerial staff of these schools, he said.
