Krishna calls on Prabhakar Kore

Belgaum: Maharashtra Governor S.M. Krishna called on Congress leader Prabhakar B. Kore at the KLES Hospital here on Thursday.

Later talking to presspersons, Mr. Krishna said he wished Mr. Kore a speedy recovery. The Governor was accompanied by the former Minister Prakash B. Hukkeri.

Doctors at the hospital said Mr. Kore was recovering fast. However, he would have to be in hospital for at least three more days.

Drop Shetty, demands DYFI

Madikeri: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Thursday urged Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to drop Fisheries Minister and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Nagaraj Shetty as he had allegedly instigated the recent Mangalore disturbances.

Speaking to presspersons here, the State secretary of DYFI N.L. Bharatraj said its fact-finding team had ascertained the hand of the Minister in the disturbances.

He said the DYFI demanded the State Government to initiate stringent action against the accused, besides paying compensation to the families of the people killed and those who lost their property. — Staff Correspondent

Dharna planned

HUBLI: Members of the Karnataka State Daily Wage Employees' Federation will observe a dharna in front of the offices of deputy commissioners in all the districts on October 31 to press for their demands.

Over 17,000 daily wage employees appointed after July 1, 1984 have been demanding regularisation of their services.

Although the daily wage employees had earlier decided to go on indefinite agitation from October 30, they decided to give more time to Government at a meeting on Tuesday, president of the federation K.S. Sharma said. — Staff Correspondent

Firing exercise

MANGALORE: Ships and aircraft of the Indian Navy will undertake a firing exercise in and around Pigeon Island (Nethrani Gudda) off Bhatkal coast in Uttara Kannada district from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. on Friday. A press release from Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries, here directed fishermen not to venture for fishing anywhere near six nautical miles of Pigeon Island during the above mentioned time. — Staff Correspondent

Directory released

PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane will release a directory produced by the Children's Rights in Goa (CRG) on "Directory of support services for children in Goa" on Friday.

The directory lists contact details of 146 NGOs, shelter homes and other facilities for children with various needs, 70 government agencies, and police stations and police outposts and health services spread across the State. An attempt has been made to make it comprehensive and user-friendly, said Venicia Cardoso and Sumedha Belokar on Thursday.

Flights to Russia

PANAJI: Transaero Airlines based in Russia began its international scheduled flights to Goa with the arrival of the first flight on Thursday from Moscow.

Transaero will operate on regular schedule round the year from Moscow and St. Petersburg, an official of Minar Travels India Private Ltd., Transaero's general sales agents for Goa said on Thursday. The flight will enable tourist and passengers from Goa to fly from Goa to Moscow and connecting to Europe and Canada. Currently they are operating Boeing 767 aircraft and in anticipation of more passengers will operate Boeing 747 jumbo from December 30, 2006.

Minar Travels (India) Private Ltd. was the first travel agency to bring charter flight from Moscow to Goa in 2001. — Special Correspondent

Candidates warned

HUBLI: The Police Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad has warned candidates appearing for the written test on October 29 for the selection of civil police, armed police and women police constables against middlemen promising to get them the job. The written examination is being held in a transparent manner and there was no scope for tampering the answer sheets, he has said. The department would take legal action against such middlemen, he warned.

DHARWAD: The "Education Adalat" scheduled to be held on Thursday has been put off to October 31, P.S. Vastrad, Additional Commissioner, has said in a release. HUBLI: The Platinum Jubilee of the Vijaya Bank was celebrated at its Lamington Road Branch here recently. Senior customer of the bank Sankayya D. Hegde was the chief guest. Award sought

Bidar: The Bharatiya Basava Balaga has demanded that the State Government include the Bhalki Hire Math among the list of persons and institutions selected for the Karnataka Ekikarana Award. Math founder Sri Channabasava Pattaddevaru struggled hard for the unification of the State, it said. He started Kannada schools during the reign of the Nizam of Hyderabad. He fought against efforts to merge Bidar district to Andhra or Maharashtra, the balaga said. — Staff Correspondent

Training programme

GULBARGA: The Poojya Doddappa Appa College of Engineering here will host a two-day short-term training programme on "Hospital Waste Management" under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Project at the Department of Civil Engineering from October 30. College principal V.G. Mytri in a press note said that the programme would be inaugurated by B.K. Bhadri, Assistant Director of the All India Council for Technical Education.During the programme, participants would be trained on characteristics of hospital waste, segregation, transportation, treatment and disposal. — Special Correspondent

Blood donation camp

Bidar: Students and staff of the National Cadet Corps donated blood to the District Hospital in Bidar on Thursday. Eleven students of the No. 3 Karnataka Air Squadron donated blood, along with five staff members.

The camp was organised by the Warrant Officer L.P. Gupta and the District Hospital's Blood Bank, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

Farmers' agitation

HUBLI: The indefinite agitation by members of the Karnataka Rajya Pakshateeta Raita Hitarakshana Kendra Samiti who are demanding revision of the minimum support price for onions entered the tenth day on Thursday.

Samiti members have decided to block the Puna-Bangalore National Highway at Gabbur Cross near Hubli on October 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to press for their demands.

Protest march

HUBLI: Scores of activists of the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti along with several Congress leaders took out a protest march here on Thursday in protest against the reported defiling of a statue of B.R. Ambedkar in Ichalkaranji in Sangli district of Maharashtra. Addressing the protestors, DSS leaders alleged that no stringent action was being taken against those found guilty of defiling the statues, and said this had encouraged others to indulge in similar acts.

Over 100 pigs dead

BIJAPUR: People of Sindagi town are living in fear of communicable diseases following death of numerous pigs.

Over 100 pigs died in different localities such as Modi Naka and Madar Oni in the last one week. Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Surgeon, S.G. Konapur, told The Hindu that the pigs could have died of hog-cholera or swine fever.
