Punjab books berth for super league

Jalandhar : Jarnail Singh and Amit Singh struck a brace each to help host Punjab beat Karnataka 4-2 and book a berth in the super league stage of the senior National hockey tournament at the Olympian Surjit Stadium here on Thursday.

Punjab took the lead in the 13th minute through a field goal by Jarnail. In the 34th minute, Amit made it 2-0 after getting a pass from Jarnail. The host consolidated the lead in the 36th minute when Jarnail completed his brace.

Laxman Rao pulled one back for Karnataka in the 48th minute, but Amit extended the lead for Punjab by scoring his second goal in the 55th minute.

In the 65th minute, Laxman Rao once again dodged the Punjab defenders to score his second goal. But that effort was not enough to bail out Karnataka.

Easy for Mumbai

Mumbai also made it to the super league stage after notching up a convincing 6-1 win over Chhattisgarh. Stanley Fernandes gave Mumbai the lead in the 18th minute after getting a pass from Jayesh Yadav. In the 24th minute, Chhatisgarh equalised through Fuzail.

Four minutes later, Vikas Pillai put Mumbai ahead again and at the stroke of half-time, Nilesh Mane converted a penalty corner to extend Mumbai's lead (3-1).

Jayesh Yadav's brace came in the 37th minute and Mumbai scored two more goals through Hemant Lethe (48th) and Shakti Thakur (67th) for a position in Pool `C' of the super league.

At Ludhiana, Indian Airlines and Delhi also advanced to the super league stage by beating Uttar Pradesh 7-1 and Jharkhand 9-1 respectively.

Jatinder Saroha, Vikas Toppo, Damandeep scored two goals each for Delhi while Pramod Kumar, Prem and Sukhpal netted one each. Arvind shot home the lone goal for Jharkhand.

At Amritsar, Railways defeated Orissa 2-0 while Chandigarh beat Patiala 3-0 at the Guru Nanak Dev University ground. — PTI
