South Zone triumphs

Palakkad: M. Vipin Lal (120, 245b, 15x4) and N.V. Valeed (124, 186b, 17x4) slammed centuries to save North from the jaws of defeat against Central on the final day of the Jacob Trophy State senior inter-zonal cricket championship at the Fort Maidan on Thursday.

North, overnight 86 for five, required a further 38 runs to make Central bat again. It lost K.

Chandrasekhara quite early.

However, a fighting 196-run partnership between Vipin and Valeed for the seventh wicket saw North amass 377 and take a 254-run lead. Knowing pretty well it was a daunting task to get it in less than 20 overs, both the captains decided to call it off for the day.

Central and South finished their engagements with four points each. However, the latter with an outright win over North emerged champion.

The scores: North 176 & 377 in 96.1 overs (Vipin Lal 120, N.V. Valeed 124, C.P. Shahid 40) drew with Central 299.
