Uttar Pradesh
Ghaziabad: An independent candidate for the Uttar Pradesh civic polls was allegedly attacked and injured by unidentified persons near his house in Upper Kot area here. Chaudhry Abid Ali, a candidate for Loni Nagar Palika chairman's post, was assaulted with iron rods and lathis near his house by a group of five to six persons on Wednesday, police said. He was admitted to a hospital in Delhi and his condition stated to be serious, they said. District Magistrate M K S Sundaram has asked police to take steps to arrest the assailants and provide security to Mr. Ali's family. Meanwhile, the Congress candidate for Ghaziabad Mayor, Pervesh Sharma, accused rival Samajwadi Party nominee Anjula Nagpal of having misused State resources for poll campaigning. In her complaint to the State Election Commission, Mr. Sharma charged that Uttar Pradesh Ministers Jagdish Rana and MLA Surender Munni were openly campaigning for Nagpal using their official vehicles. The BJP has expelled seven leaders, included former Deputy Mayor Yoga Dutt Mahapore, for contesting against official party candidates in the civic polls from Ghaziabad. Mr. Mahapore told PTI that he was denied ticket twice despite doing his best for the party. All seven leaders expelled by State BJP president Keshari Nath Tripathi are contesting as councillors from different wards.
`CM using official car'
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has been accused of violating the model code of conduct during the campaign by BJP leader Kalraj Mishra. The former BJP State president and Rajya Sabha member, who is here to campaign for the BJP mayoral candidate Ravindra Patni and other corporators, told reporters that Mr. Yadav was using his official car to campaign in Etawah, Mainpuri and Kannauj districts. The BJP leader apprehended that the Samajwadi Party chief would misuse government machinery during the civic elections and demanded deployment of Central forces during polling. The Congress and the SP had adopted appeasement policies in the State civic bodies elections, he alleged.
`No development'
MEERUT: The Congress has hit out at the Samajwadi Party-led Government's much trumpeted "Kanya Vidya Dhan" and unemployment allowance schemes as ``gratification at a time when elections are fast approaching''. State Congress president Salman Khursheed alleged that the Chief Minister had done little for development of any other place in the State except his native village Saifai. Speaking at a public meeting here on Wednesday night, he said there had been no development proposals for cities like Kanpur, Meerut and Moradabad because the Samajwadi Party feared all the credit would go to the Congress-led Government at the Centre. Mr. Khursheed accused both the SP and the BJP of creating divisions among Hindus and Muslims. ``Today the whole of Uttar Pradesh is looking towards the Congress as people are of the view that all leaders only talk but only the Congress has proved competence,'' he claimed. - PTI.
