Villagers stage demonstration

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: People from Doddagaddavalli village held a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday, protesting against the alleged discrimination by the authorities concerned in issuing Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards.

Their contention was that though they have applied for BPL cards, the authorities issued them Above Poverty Line (APL) cards.

They have also alleged that authorities failed in identifying the actual beneficiaries.

Mr. Hombale Gowda told The Hindu that, with the State Government taking lenient view in identifying beneficiaries, 69 per cent of the total population in the district had been given BPL cards.

The district administration had arranged a meeting in Kalabhavan on Thursday and the District in-charge and PWD Minister H.D. Revanna took part in it. He directed the authorities to identify the actual beneficiaries, without succumbing to political pressures.

He cautioned them that, the Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Panchayat would be held responsible for any discrepancy.

He directed them to initiate action against any official for dereliction of duty in identifying actual beneficiaries and asked them to complete the process before November 30, without giving room for complaints.
