Staff Correspondent

`Educate children on its importance'

HAMPI: A.K. Shastri, senior research scholar, Sirsi, stressed the need for taking all care to protect historical documents.

He was delivering the presidential address at the 18th conference of Karnataka History Congress organised under the joint auspices of Kannada University and the Congress at the university campus here on Thursday. Home Minister M.P. Prakash inaugurated the conference.

"All the historical documents, especially manuscripts on paper, palm leaves, copper plates, files, monuments should be considered treasure trove of knowledge. Care should be taken by all to protect them and educate children on its importance," he said.

Several historical documents got damaged owing to lack of Awareness and negligence. He wanted urgent steps to protect the manuscripts using the advancement in the field of science and technology and also with the help of computers. Manuscripts in other languages should also be protected as they would throw light on Karnataka's history.

Dr. Shastri said steps should be taken by the universities and religious maths to teach some of the ancient scripts, which were on the verge of extinction. "Without the ability to read original scripts, it is very difficult to bring out a good work.

Researchers faced a lot of difficulties and besides overcoming them they should also have patience and should present true facts without hurting the sentiments of others.

Researchers should also bear in mind the unity and integrity of the country before bringing the historical facts to light. "Let us learn from history," he said.
