Plea to regulate real estate industry
|
CHENNAI
: Members of the Institution of Valuers (IOV) have urged the Government to regulate the real estate industry by passing laws, which would not only protect the public from falling prey to fraudulent practices, but also stabilise land prices.
Speaking to reporters on the eve of the two-day international conference on "Asset Management", which would begin on Friday, IOV's former national president C H Gopinatha Rao said here on Wednesday that real estate business in the country was an unorganised sector. The boom in the segment now demanded measures to protect the people from fraud, or incompetence in real estate transactions.
The Governments should bring out legislation because real estate was a major business where black money was created. Two main reasons for the increase in cost of land were the increase in floor space index by the planning authorities and the role of intermediaries, he added.
Conference chairman P R Seshadri said that at the conference, delegates would provide an overview of real estate market in India, valuation of specialised properties, real estate development opportunities here.
Speakers and resource persons from Singapore and a few other countries would present papers.
The conference is to be held at Hotel GRT Grand and would be inaugurated by veteran valuer Roshan H Namavati from Mumbai, he added.
