"Railway policy clear on carrying dead bodies"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI : "Dead bodies are being given priority over other parcels by Southern Railway. Railway officials are empowered to withdraw any parcel from trains to accommodate the bodies," according to Southern Railway Chief Public Relations Manager S. Krishnamoorthi.

In a statement, Mr. Krishnamoorthi said the railway's revised leasing policy had clearly outlined the procedure for carrying dead bodies on a priority basis.

Powers

Even if the cabin of the assistant guard was leased out, officials were given powers to cancel the lease for that day and use the cabin for transporting the dead body. Lower level staff had been suitably instructed on this count. If people still faced any problem, then they could contact the Commercial Control / Chennai Division (044 - 2535 5793), helpline / marketing cell/ Southern Railway (044- 2534 1558) and Southern Railway/ headquarters/ commercial control (044- 2535 0308).
