DDT not banned, says ICC chief

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: In reference to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's recent observation that the World Health Organisation had banned DDT, S. Ganesan, Chairman, International Treaties Experts Committee, Indian Chemical Council, says: "WHO never banned DDT. In fact, it has been strongly advocating its continued use for disease vector control. In 2000, it said `DDT still has an important role to play in reducing the burden of malaria.' In 2004, it supported continued use of DDT for disease vector control and cautioned that a premature shift to less effective and more costly alternatives would be unsustainable. As recently as September 15, 2006, the WHO stated that DDT pos s no health risk when used properly."
