HYDERABAD: Former Maharajgunj MLA Prem Singh Rathore was elected president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) city unit for a three-year term on Thursday.

All the eight forms submitted to the election officer, Rajeshwar Rao, supported his candidature and he was declared elected unanimously. The announcement was greeted with bursting of crackers all along the Barkatpura road where the city office is located.

The election was not a smooth affair with a few other aspirants too claiming the post.

Senior leaders, however, avoided a contest after holding discussions with them. Barkatpura Corporator Venkat Reddy, a serious contender, had to back out with the party preferring a candidate from the North Indian community. Another factor that worked in Mr. Rathore's favour is the party's decision to utilise the services of former MLAs and MPs extensively to strengthen the party.
