Garbage disposal near airstrip: Corporation to seek extension

Staff Reporter

Council decides to meet Defence Minister A.K. Antony

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has decided to seek extension to Navy's permission for dumping garbage near its airstrip at Willingdon Island. The council meeting held here on Thursday decided to seek the help of A.K. Antony, Union Defence Minister, in getting an extension.

Navy gave permission to use the land near the airport till October 31 for garbage disposal. The Corporation was yet to find an alternative solution for disposal of garbage. The Navy's objection was that unscientific dumping of garbage near its airstrip increased bird presence in the area, causing threat to flight security.

The Health standing committee meeting held after the council meeting also could not finalise the tender for transporting the garbage. The lowest quote presented on the last day for submitting tender was Rs.1,790 per tonne.

However, this was not finalised, as the total amount would come up to Rs.13 crore annually. The Corporation was paying around Rs.2 crore for clearing the garbage.

The meeting also decided to seek police assistance in checking unauthorised dumping of garbage at Pashnithodu in West Kochi. It was also decided to convene Health standing committee meeting soon to decide on the re-distribution of contingent labourers.

The council also demanded a Vigilance inquiry into the mistake made in budgetary allocation for works on Stadium Link Road. Councillor T.J. Vinod who raised the issue said the Finance committee approved work for Rs.64 lakh and later it was mentioned in official records that work for Rs.6.14 lakh would be awarded.
