Varsity sports meet draws flak

Staff Reporter

Council member charges it was "full of violations that are not seen anywhere"

MADURAI: The sports meet conducted by Madura Kamaraj University drew flak at the Academic Council meeting held on Thursday with accusations of `improper conduct of the games.'

Immediately after the proceedings began, I. Ismail, a council member and the Principal of M. S. S. Wakf Board College, moved an adjournment motion stating that the inter-college sports meet organised by the university recently was "full of violations that are not seen anywhere."

He pointed out that the manner in which the sports meet was conducted was bad as coaches were not allowed into the venue, the timer was not working, tracks were not good and derogatory language was used against college representatives who accompanied the players.

The member also charged that the university's Physical Education Department did not send proper communication to the colleges and hence the participation got restricted.

As Dr. Ismail continued his tirade against the authorities, the Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, objected to the manner in which the criticism was being made and asked the member to resume his seat.

"Did you inform the matter to us? The code of conduct should be followed by members in the House," the Vice-Chancellor said adding that a written complaint should have been given.

To this, the member replied that it was given in writing at the sports meet itself.

When Dr. Ismail insisted that the issue should be discussed in detail, the Vice-Chancellor did not allow it by saying that the member was exceeding the limit and personal attacks could not be allowed.
