KOCHI: The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) authorities on Thursday suspended the commander of the dredger `Nehru Shadabdi' as part of an inquiry into the collision of two dredgers in port waters in the early hours of Tuesday. Sources in the CPT said a preliminary inquiry into the incident was completed and that a more detailed inquiry began. The report was expected soon, sources said. The CPT also decided to initiate legal proceedings against Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), sources said. It would seek compensation for the damage suffered by `Nehru Shadabdi', sources said. The DCI's dredger `Dredge VIII' was involved in head on collision that took place at four nautical miles off Kochi coast. The vessels were brought to the port water by Tuesday afternoon. Though there were no casualty or spillage of fuel due to the collision, the CPT dredger suffered considerable damage. Sources indicated on Wednesday that maintenance dredging was not affected, as DCI pressed into service another vessel.
