Cops claim to foil bid to loot ATM

NEW DELHI: The Capital's North-East district police have arrested a four-member gang which was allegedly planning to loot an ATM unit of the UTI bank at C-9 Market, Yamuna Vihar, Gokalpuri.

Two country-made pistols, three live cartridges, two knives, a torch, three mobile phones, and certain other material which the gang was planning to use for the alleged offence were seized from their possession.

Three alleged cheats arrested

NEW DELHI: Three persons allegedly trying to cheat a woman were arrested by the police at Subzi Mandi in North Delhi on Wednesday.

According to the police, Bala, wife of Dharam Pal, a resident of Ghanta Ghar in Subzi Mandi, was approached by three persons who told her that they were in possession of a huge quantity of jewellery and cash and were ready to trade it for rings and chain. Ms. Bala agreed and handed over two rings and a gold chain to the accused, who gave her a polythene bag in return.

However, when she opened the bag, Ms. Bala realised that she had been cheated. She then raised an alarm. Local residents then nabbed the three suspects and handed them over to the police.

DU to honour Amitabh, Sheila Dikshit

NEW DELHI: Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and cartoonist R K Laxman are among the eminent personalities who are being given honorary degrees by the Delhi University.

The others who are being honoured by the university include industrialist Ratan Tata, historian Romila Thapar, writer Mahashweta Devi and scientific advisor to Prime Minister C N R Rao.

The varsity will organise a special convocation in November, where these eminent personalities will be given the honouris causa degree, Dean Students Welfare of Delhi University Prof S K Vij said on Thursday.

Youth sentenced to two years' RI

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has sentenced a 20-year old man to two years' rigorous imprisonment for molesting a minor girl last year.

Convicting Shankar Oraon, a resident of Katihar in Bihar, Additional Sessions Judge K C Lohia observed that only the charge of outraging the modesty of the four-year old girl was established against him.

The court declining to convict him for rape of the victim held that her medical examination did not show any trauma or injury on the private parts.

Five alleged dacoits held

NEW DELHI: The North District police claimed to have nabbed an alleged five-member dacoit gang planning to loot a bus and seized from their possession firearms and cartridges.

According to police the gang was arrested on October 25, after a trap was laid for them at a place opposite Sri Ram Institute, Maurice Nagar and during interrogation the gang reportedly confessed to their plan of looting a running bus on the route.
