dated October 28, 1956: Vital role of UN

Earl Attlee, the former British Prime Minister, said in Jaipur on October 26 that unless the human race had sufficient wisdom to control atom and hydrogen bombs, "our civilisation may go down as civilisations have gone down in the past." These weapons were unheard of when representatives of various nations had gathered at San Francisco ten years ago to form the United Nations Organisation. Earl Attlee, who was speaking at the inauguration of the UN Day celebrations, said the San Francisco meeting had been conscious that the UN was to be something more than a political organisation and an organisation merely to prevent war. While prevention of war was a negative aspect of its work, promotion of peace was its positive aspect. The causes of war would have to be searched out and dealt with. He felt that perhaps too much attention was being paid to the political discussions in the UN and not enough to the fundamental work done by it. Inaugurating the celebrations, Mr. V. K. Krishna Menon defined India's foreign policy as only a projection of the country's national policies to international relations. Their main concern in the international sphere was "to assist in the progress towards peace, the development of the underdeveloped countries and the liberation of people suffering under colonial domination." It was not India's intention to lecture to the other countries. India believed that example was always better than precept.
